Who we are
Circle Lake Ranch is a family-owned equestrian center at 1134 FM 1463 in Katy, Texas, teaching horseback riding since 1998. The ranch runs weekly group riding lessons for ages 6 and up in both English and Western riding, and a summer horse camp for children that has operated every year since 1998. Teaching is built on a structured horsemanship curriculum — safety, horse knowledge, grooming and tack, and mounted skills — rather than riding alone.
Our Story
Circle Lake Ranch opened its gates to riding students in 1998, when this stretch of Katy was still mostly open land. Families came for lessons, stayed for summers of horse camp, and in many cases came back years later with children of their own.
Katy grew up around the ranch. Interstate 10 is half a mile away and neighbourhoods now surround the property, but the barn still runs the way a barn should: quiet horses, consistent instruction, and students who are expected to learn horse care as seriously as they learn to ride.
Across those years, Circle Lake Ranch has taught approximately 3,900 regular lesson students — an owner-derived historical estimate across the life of the program rather than a deduplicated count — and welcomed more than 3,400 summer camp registrations.
A Horsemanship Program Built Over Decades
The Circle Lake Ranch riding program did not come out of a manual. It was written here, lesson by lesson, from decades of teaching beginners in Katy and watching what actually helps a nervous child become a capable rider.
Layne developed that horsemanship curriculum and spent years teaching riding and training riders herself. Today she oversees the riding-lesson program, and the structure she built — ground safety first, horse knowledge alongside saddle time, and progression earned rather than scheduled — is still how students move forward.
That curriculum covers safety education, understanding horse behaviour, grooming and horse care, tack and equipment, and mounted riding skills, taught in a deliberate sequence.
How We Teach
Horsemanship, not just riding
Riding is one part of working with a horse. Handling, grooming, tack and horse knowledge are taught alongside time in the saddle.
Safety is taught explicitly
Ground safety and mounted safety are part of the curriculum from the first lesson, not warnings added at the end.
Understand the horse first
Students learn to read behaviour and body language before being asked to control a horse at speed.
Progressive development
Each skill builds on the one before it, and riders move forward when they are ready rather than on a fixed timetable.
English and Western traditions
Circle Lake Ranch teaches both, so riders see two approaches with a shared foundation of balance, quiet hands and good judgement.
Respect, compassion and learning why
The horse's comfort comes first, and students are always told the reason behind the rule so good habits hold up on their own.

English and Western Riding
Circle Lake Ranch teaches both English and Western riding. The tack is different, the seat is different, and the traditions come from different places — but the fundamentals are shared: balance, quiet hands, a steady leg and respect for the horse.
Students are exposed to both, which tends to make them more thoughtful riders. For the longevity of our lesson horses, we do not jump them.

Summer Camp Since 1998
Summer horse camp has run at Circle Lake Ranch every year since 1998, welcoming more than 3,400 camp registrations across those summers. That figure counts registrations and camp spots rather than unique children, because many campers attend more than one week or return in later years.
Camp has always been horsemanship education for children rather than pony rides — riding matched to each child's level, grooming and horse care, and the safety habits that come first.
